Mick Moloney transformed Irish America. A brilliant musician, pioneering scholar, and passionate advocate, he was a cultural catalyst who gave voice to overlooked, revived forgotten traditions and reshaped how we understand Irish identity. Through his music, research, and storytelling, Mick helped bring dignity, depth, and authenticity to Irish-American culture at a time when it was often reduced to caricature.
Throughout his life, Mick founded landmark groups, like Green Fields of America and Cherish the Ladies, that brought countless musicians, both emerging and established, into the spotlight. He was a tireless advocate for inclusivity, opening doors for women in a tradition long dominated by men. His work explored the deep musical connections between Irish, African, and Appalachian cultures, and his concerts, lectures, and collaborations revealed surprising common ground, using music as a powerful vehicle for dialogue and understanding.
As a teacher and mentor, he shaped generations of artists, scholars, and tradition-bearers. Today, his extensive personal archive stands as one of the most important collections of Irish-American heritage in existence. Mick was more than a performer or academic, he was a bridge between past and present, between people and places, and he was a friend to all of us.
Mind Yourself will be the first documentary to tell Mick’s full story and we need your help to bring it to life. Through rare footage, powerful performances, and the voices of those he inspired, the film will celebrate a life devoted to culture, connection, and truth-telling through music. Your support will help preserve his legacy and ensure that future generations understand just how much one voice can do. Please consider donating today. Let’s honor Mick by finishing the story he began.
